Madagascar Hat: Madagascar Raffia Sun hats really block the sun. They have a double layer of raffia which is why they can have two colors - one inside and one out. The material is made from the giant leaves of a kind of palm tree that grows primarily in Madagascar. They are some of the biggest leaves in the world. They are dried out, pulled into thin strips and woven into a a fine raffia cloth. That cloth is then dyed and sewn by hand into hats.
Raffia is famous because it is one of the most flexible materials to make hats out of. This means that your raffia hat can be crushed without fear of its being ruined. These hats have something in common with panama hats which are also made from palm leafs. It is said that a pamana hat can be rolled up and stuck into a cigar tube without harm. We have not tried that with these hats -- I doubt they would fit! These hats qualify for $3 shipping. If you have any questions, please phone us at 1-917-825-0112.
