A very large women’s hat that won’t crush when you bend it. It is made of a special braided and rolled cellulose fiber that you could never tell is not cloth.

This technique was a Japanese invention called Toyo. It is really fascinating to see how the hat is made starting from giant rolls of tissue paper like what they might line a box with at a high end department store.

The material is sunproof and the nearly 7 inch brim fully blocks the direct light.

Each strand of fiber has been dyed multiple colors, so when you look at the hat, it has a pleasing complex color, rather than just sections of plain solid color. Unlike in many lower quality hats, there is no polypropylene or other plastics mixed into the toyo to make this hat.

We call this feminine hat “Ravel’s Bolero” after the orchestral work that repeats with more and more instruments as it crescendos louder and louder.
