Almost a century ago, Mac Belford began selling fashionable hats to New Yorkers and created a tradition which brought buyers from across the city to his Brooklyn stores. Today, the Mac Belford legacy continues, but with the help of technology these hats are available to customers worldwide and are made in a wide assortment of colors and styles.
An example of this is this maroon Flat/Ivy Cap. This profound color embodies elegance and mystery and is versatile in the many ways that it can be worn. The cap has a bronze snap that allows it to be opened up in front (with the snap showing) or worn snapped shut. The brim itself is also adjustable to change from a curved baseball cap shape to a flat bill shape. The inner lining features soft lambs’ skin over the forehead and quilted polyester under the wool.
With the growth of this millinery business, the search for perfection defied borders and boundaries. Our buyers ventured as far out as the islands of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland where they discovered this hand loomed, lightweight wool. This unique Harris Tweed is made by a cottage industry of weavers who create the tweed in their homes on bicycle powered looms.
Mac Belford has now combined the tradition of Scottish tweed making and American millinery to create a range of beautifully crafted hats, made right here in Brooklyn.
