Milan straw is stiff and can not be crushed. It is however very durable. Milan has traditionally been used to make many of the finest summer hats.
Milan straw is made from fine wheat that is carefully selected and then braided by hand. The finished braid for this hat was extremely narrow: 4 mm wide. Most fine milan is 6 mm. It is very very difficult to find artisans who can sew this fine.
The braid is then sewn around and around to make the hat.
